SAP Joule Capability Gate Map

SAP says 200+ agents automate your business. Here's what's actually documented to write to your ERP versus view-and-hand-off — and real examples of the gates a capability sits behind, straight from SAP's own documentation across S/4HANA and Concur.

200+
Joule agents, marketed
SAP's whole Business AI platform
55
Write-capable capabilities, documented
Across all 8 S/4HANA areas below
SAP's own Joule Capabilities Guide splits every capability into three tiers: Navigational, Informational, and Transactional. Read SAP's own definition of “Transactional” closely:You can use transactional capabilities to view and manage business objects directly in your Joule conversation and navigate to the related SAP Fiori apps to perform further actions on these business objects. A large share of what gets marketed as “agents that act” is, in SAP's own documentation, view-and-hand-off to a Fiori app for a human to finish.

Real worked examples: what a gate actually looks like

These are the capabilities checked this deeply for this demo — one from SAP's own flagship “autonomous” manufacturing pitch, one from Concur's expense-report Joule agent. Each shows the shape of the real question: not “can Joule do this,” but “is it configured to, here.”

Manufacturing

Production Planning and Operations Agent

The pitch: "Autonomously validate and release production orders when required conditions are met"

SAP News Center / SAP Connect coverage, October 2025

What SAP's own docs actually require

Scope item

BJ5 — Make-to-Stock Production, Discrete Manufacturing — must be activated

Business catalog

SAP_SCM_BC_PRODN_ORD_CTRL_MC must be assigned to the user

Batch cap

Up to 20 production orders processed per run, no more

Human checkpoint

"If the agent detects a situation where it needs your decision as a supervisor, Joule asks you for confirmation" — the planner confirms the proposed changes before the agent completes the release.

Finance / Expense (Concur)

Joule Base — Expense Transactions

The pitch: "Interact with Joule to create, edit, submit, and recall expense reports. Also create expenses, add expenses to reports, create/add attendees, create itemizations, and allocations."

SAP Concur PUBLIC FAQ, "Joule with SAP Concur solutions," November 2025

What SAP's own docs actually require

Population gate

"Today, Joule is only available for end users. Support for other roles will be available at a later time" — no delegate/proxy access, even though expense delegation is standard practice in mid-market finance

Infrastructure prerequisite

Customers must configure SAP BTP, SAP Workzone, and integrate SAP Cloud Identity Services (SAP CIS) with their SAP Concur solution

Functional cap (Premium tier)

The buy-up Validation Agent "does not modify custom fields, create missing objects (e.g., requests), or validate receipt accuracy and authenticity"

Human checkpoint

Joule Base itself is conversational and user-driven — the person files their own report by asking. The Premium-tier Validation Agent "walks users through the final steps of expense report submission, flagging missing or incomplete entries and prompting for quick resolution," but the user still submits.

None of this is a secret — it's all in SAP's own help documentation. What's missing is the map from a gate list like this to any one client's actual configuration: which scope items are activated, which business catalogs are assigned, on this exact release and edition. SAP ships the capability guide. Nobody ships the “here's what's actually turned on, for you, right now” document — because that's implementation and governance work, not product documentation, and it's genuinely different for every company.

The capability list above is a real inventory extracted from SAP's own documentation. The gate detail is verified this deeply for one capability — mapping the rest against your real configuration is exactly the work a discovery call scopes. Nothing here is saved or sent anywhere; this runs entirely in your browser.
